Harpers Ferry, WV at a Glance
Located at the confluence of the Potomac
and Shenandoah
Rivers, the historic town of Harpers Ferry is found where the states of
Maryland, Virginia
and West Virginia meet.
Recognized as a significant site in African-American history and the Civil War,
Harpers Ferry is where John Brown, an anti-slavery activist, led a raid on the
Armory in 1859, considered by some as the beginning of the Civil War. Harpers
Ferry commemorates this event through museums, historic sites and annual events.
The town itself is surrounded by Harpers
Ferry National Historical Park, a recreational area that features hiking
trials, as well as an interpretive center where reenactments of Civil War events
are performed. The park is also home to the Freedom's
Birth festival, which celebrates American independence with fireworks and
Civil War interpretive programs in July. The Harpers
Ferry Flea Market is a popular attraction for shopping enthusiasts, as it
features fresh produce, artwork and unique gift items.
